A robot that charges electric cars is just around the corner
Official Volkswagen trailer – the robot, or rather a prototype, was first unveiled in 2019, and the idea continues to be developed. Volkswagen added only a couple of details to the original design: blinking digital eyes and R2-D2 sounds (like in Star Wars).
Robot running on an algorithm
This mechanism will work according to a simple algorithm:
- After parking the EV, the driver asks to top up the battery.
- The robot brings a mobile charging station and independently plugs in the charging cable.
- When the EV is charged, the mobile stop is returned to its place, and along the way, the machine keeps stopping as needed, passing moving cars and pedestrians.

On the other hand, Tesla Motors introduced the idea of an EV-charging robot long before Volkswagen in 2015, only this one looks more like a metal snake.
When Tesla’s self-driving cars arrive, it will inevitably be necessary to charge an electric car without human touch.
